After putting our backs into celebrating the National Day of Laos, (someone had to do it and these communist lads didn't seem to be up for it....), we were in need of a bit of quiet sightseeing.
We hopped in a tuk-tuk and asked the (glum) driver to take us to Patuxay - the Victory Monument.
Built between 1957 and 1968, (using US cash and cement intended for a new runway), it's a war memorial to the soldiers who fought in WW2 and the independence war with France in 1949.
Which is slightly ironic, given that it has more than a passing resemblance to the Arc de Triomphe........
Good views from the top.
We called in at the tourist information office on the way home. The (glum) information man wasn't in any way informative and we left none the wiser.
Apart from this:
If only we'd been here in September.....
