The Big Day Out

Yesterday, we signed up for a "Big Day Out" (hereafter referred to as BDO)

Beginning at 0800 and returning at 1930 we made 9 stops (plus lunch)

It was such a BDO that I've decided to break it down into chapters.

So if you're sitting comfortably, I'll begin..

CHAPTER 1: The White Temple.

Looking like a cross between the work of a deranged wedding cake manufacturer and the home of the White Witch in Narnia (minus the Turkish delight), the White Temple is simply stunning.

Built on the site of a wonky old Buddhist temple, it's the ongoing work of Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat . (No, I've never heard of him either).
It opened in 1997 and they hope to have it finished by 2093. (He's obviously not paying them by the hour).

Snowy white and covered in mirrors, it's an icing sugar fantasy that's guarded by a fierce dragon.

Once past him, you have to cross the underworld where the not so lucky are looking for a helping hand....

Some unfortunates didn't make it this far.....

Oo er.....

Putting all that unpleasantness behind you, and slightly snowblind, you climb the dazzlingly white, mirrored steps and enter The Temple itself.

This is covered inside by a mural depicting recent events and famous personalities of the day. ( I saw Michael Jackson & Elvis: and I thought both of them were dead...)

Sadly (depending on your point of view) photography was not permitted and I'm afraid I was too stunned to be able to relate much of it here....

Once back outside it was more of the crazed white fretwork etc.

And then to top it off, we saw this:

No idea what this is (or indeed why it's there) but I saw it so thought you should see it too.

And so we bring Chapter 1 to a close. Stay tuned for Chapter 2: The Blue Temple.....
